What is Bowen Therapy
Bowen is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy (developed by the late Tom Bowen in Geelong, Australia), it is sometimes known as the Homeopathy of bodywork.
The practitioner delivers signals to the nervous system at specific locations on muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves, working holistically engaging the body's innate healing abilities. The treatment consists of sets of light, cross fibre moves that have rest periods of at least two minutes between them, allowing the body to integrate the treatment.
Bowen helps address patterns of dysfunctional muscle recruitment (usually developed over time) and posture, engaging the parasympathetic nervous system it is deeply relaxing and can reactivate healing from trauma, sickness, or surgery that has stopped or reached a plateau. It is also profoundly relaxing.
Every single person is unique so I tailor my treatment around my client, their expectations and my findings.
Benefits of Bowen
What can Bowen help with? Some conditions that usually respond well to Bowen are:
- Back pain and sciatica
- Digestive and bowel problems
- Earache and TMJ problems
- Migraines and other types of headaches
- Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
- Hip, knee, ankle and foot problems
- Neck and shoulder problems including frozen shoulder
- Groin pain, pelvic tilt and uneven leg length
- Respiratory problems and hayfever
- RSI, carpal tunnel syndrome and tennis elbow
- Sports and other traumatic injuries
Unique attributes of Bowen
- Every persons body responds to Bowen in its own time and way, sometimes immediately, but usually on a time scale of between 5- 10 days (occasionally longer).
- A treatment typically lasts between 30-60 mins, the timing totally depending on how the persons body integrates and responds to the treatment.
- Bowen works well over a course of 3 treatments, one a week, and can often resolve a problem in this time, though chronic conditions may take longer, the aim of Bowen therapy is to help the client make a full and speedy recovery, rather than involve them in long term treatment, (some chronic conditions may need maintenance treatments if they don't completely resolve) all is totally dependant on your needs and how your body responds.
- Acute conditions may respond well and may only need one treatment.
- A Bowen treatment consists of sets of moves, after which there is a pause of at least 2mins, this allows your body to process and integrate the signals applied through the nervous system.
- No other complimentary Therapies (except Homeopathy and Nutrition) should be had for at least x4 days before a Bowen treatment/ or course and for at least x5 days after, as this may affect the efficacy of the treatments.
- No hot showers, baths or heat or cold packs should be used in the first 24 hrs after a treatment.
I'm very excited to be able to share this amazing therapy with you
Bowen is available for all people, from babies to the elderly. However if you're receiving treatment for a condition, it is advisable consult your GP. If you're unsure, please contact me.
A Bowen treatment lasts between half an hour to an hour.
After a treatment it is recommended to drink plenty of water in the next 24/48 hours, and aim to move around every hour or so the next day. This muscle movement helps the lympahtic system to expell the toxins released in the treatment.

I offer treatments in two clinic locations, and some home or workplace visits are available. Please see my booking page for information.
Treatment is ideally performed directly onto the skin with you dressed in your underwear with full towel etiquette (for your warmth and modesty), or through light clothing if you prefer, in which case please arrive wearing something lightweight and non-slippery (avoid skintight/lycra).
For example thin vest top and loose fitting sports shorts would be ideal.
